Call it prairie noir or Canadiana desert rock: Abigail Lapell sings haunting, gorgeous modern folk songs inspired by mysticism, old love letters, nursery rhymes and lullabies. Her 2017 sophomore album HIDE NOR HAIR won Contemporary Album of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Hailed as an artist to watch by NOW Toronto, she’s toured across Canada, the U.S. and Europe, performing on vocals, piano, harmonica and finger style guitar. GETAWAY, Lapell’s ambitious third release, is out February 2019 on Coax Records. Produced and recorded by Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre, Amelia Curran), the album features a talented cast of local collaborators including Christine Bougie (lap steel), Dan Fortin (bass), Jake Oelrichs (drums), Lisa Bozikovic (piano/vocals) and Dana Sipos (vocals).
Bird City is the banjo/tenor guitar project of Jenny Mitchell, a Guelph, Ontario-based songwriter who previously performed as Jenny Omnichord and fronted the band The Barmitzvah Brothers among her many other musical projects. With Winnowing, the debut album by Bird City, Jenny moves beyond her quirky Omnichord persona, playing sparse, personal songs on the banjo and tenor guitar. Jenny has been developing these exposed and poetic songs of paranoia, heartbreak and self-examination for nearly 15 years and is now bringing them to the audience they deserve.
