Michael C. Duguay’s skillfully-crafted and literary lyrics explore the human experience by the same method which his songs explore the folk music tradition; they invert it, distort it, provoke it’s anxieties, shine light on the dark bits, and revel in its occasional brightness. Toying with universal, traditional themes, lyrically and sonically, while simultaneously drawing on his own breadth of unique experience and influences, Michael carves out work which is both familiar and unsettling, encyclopedic and deeply esoteric, whimsical and stone-could stoic.
Joyful Joyful was born in Peterborough and now lives in Toronto. Their songs draw from sacred and folk vocal traditions and modern drone/electronic experimentation. With dense, deep-meditation soundscapes, they build new worlds in which mesmerizing, melismatic singing speaks only truth - about miracles, about love and sex, about our fallen world and that nameless aching longing in our chests. Surely these are the last days; take your neighbour’s hand and say, “I feel ya.”
