Classically trained, but brought together musically playing Irish pub songs, The Bombadils' Luke Fraser and Sarah Frank create beautiful harmonies and enchanting melodies by reconfiguring old-time music, bluegrass, sea shanties and even jazz into a new folk framework. The juxtaposition of landlubber and maritimer fits into their world as well, with Sarah's prairie upbringing and Luke's roots in the eastern Canadian maritimes. His guitar, mandolin and well-placed harmonies are the ideal counterpoint to her sweet-yet-powerful lead vocals, lyrical fiddle playing and claw-hammer banjo. Augmented on record by cello, upright bass, flute and bagpipes, their innovative instrumentation and arrangements give their songs layer upon layer of sonically satisfying surprises. For this performance, The Bombadils will be joined by Eric Wright (The Fretless) on cello.
Luke Michielsen is a songwriter, guitarist and anecdotal storyteller. His songs are a marriage of distinctive acoustic guitar parts with lyrics that combine poetic verse with everyday language.
Known for his light hearted comedic sense, the spontaneity of Luke's song introductions are often as entertaining as the music itself, and therein lies his charm. With enough vulnerability, Luke gives more than a performance; he shares himself and his music, leaving listeners satisfied, if not delighted by the experience.
