Classically trained, but brought together musically playing Irish pub songs, The Bombadils' Luke Fraser and Sarah Frank create beautiful harmonies and enchanting melodies by reconfiguring old-time music, bluegrass, sea shanties and even jazz into a new folk framework. The juxtaposition of landlubber and maritimer fits into their world as well, with Sarah's prairie upbringing and Luke's roots in the eastern Canadian maritimes. His guitar, mandolin and well-placed harmonies are the ideal counterpoint to her sweet-yet-powerful lead vocals, lyrical fiddle playing and claw-hammer banjo. Augmented on record by cello, upright bass, flute and bagpipes, their innovative instrumentation and arrangements give their songs layer upon layer of sonically satisfying surprises. For this performance, The Bombadils will be joined by Eric Wright (The Fretless) on cello.
Luke Michielsen’s music is bright indie folk. With a writing style similar to Neil Young and vocals reminiscent of R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, he shows a rare aptitude for melody and provocative lyrics.
After the success of his 2014 full-length Oh Surround Me, which was named “Pick of the Week” by CBC Radio, Luke has toured Canada extensively. He recently released a single called Berlin, ON, which ponders the history of the renaming of his home city Kitchener, in 1916.
